Career History and Qualifications

Since 2005 I have been giving private lessons and working part-time as a native English teacher in the Paris area (Ile de France). After arriving in Paris with my wife in the summer, 2002, I started working as one of the business English teachers for Business Talk France in Paris, France. After two and a half years, I have been working for myself and for small language schools since 2005. After living and working in the Paris region for the last six years, I have become quite familiar with the public transport system and can find my way easily around Paris and suburbs.

Before moving to France in 2002, I resigned from my position as a Senior Product Information Specialist (basically, technical writer), at Unisys Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, where I had worked for six years. Before my employment with Unisys, I worked for almost six years as part of a large product information team at Evans & Sutherland in Salt Lake City. During the 15 years from 1986 to 2001, my primary responsibilities were to test, research, and then develop the IT product requirements (typically, training and/or documentation) for computer software and hardware products. In addition to the familiarity that I have acquired regarding the state-of-the-art hardware systems and software/firmware programs produced by the companies for which I have worked, I have learned to navigate with ease through the world of PC and LAN/WAN applications as well as the Internet.

In view of my U.S. work experience, it might seem that the most logical direction for me look for employment would be as a computer technology professional. Realistically, however, I believe that my best opportunities, at least in France and other non-English speaking countries, are in the field of teaching. After college, I started out as a teacher, first as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Alberta, Canada, then moving on to teaching jobs with CUSO (the Canadian Peace Corps) in Madagascar where I taught both primary level math and EFL to adults. I later spent a year teaching English and mathematics at a private French lycée in Asnieres, outside of Paris. After several stints as a substitute teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, I went back to college and obtained a U.S. secondary level teaching certificate. I later decided to leave high school teaching (and teaching in general) after being offered a position in educational software development.

My non-teaching employment experience has provided background and skills that would be very useful to a teaching career - especially business English. I am highly computer literate and familiar with the latest software/hardware standards and multimedia concepts. I have always managed to become a valuable asset for any company where I have worked. I have communicated well with marketing, technical support, and engineering personnel. In addition to the writing of technical manuals, I have produced newsletters, ad copy, project proposals, and quarterly reports. I am very confident of my interpersonal skills and I have always fit in quickly to a new work environment. I have experience working in a variety of settings (in North America, Europe, and Africa) and I am confident of my communication abilities. I am fluent in French and my Spanish language skills are passable. Please review the following page for specifics of my work and educational background.
